We’re recruiting: Director, Radiation Safety (Radiation Safety Officer) ⚛️
Harvard University is looking for a strategic and visionary leader to serve as our Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) in Cambridge, MA!
In this pivotal leadership role within EHSS, you’ll be responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing a comprehensive safety program that protects our diverse research community, the environment, and university property.
Key Responsibilities:
• Strategic Leadership: Serve as the university’s RSO, providing tactical direction across all teaching and research missions.
• Regulatory Excellence: Lead liaison efforts with federal, state, and local agencies to maintain total regulatory compliance.
• Safety Culture & Training: Design high-impact training programs focused on safety behaviors, compliance, and risk mitigation.
• Audits & Governance: Oversee RLS audits and represent the department on critical university committees (Radiation Safety, Workplace Safety, Emergency Management).
• Continuous Improvement: Harness safety informatics, metrics, and instructional technology to modernize safety protocols.
What We’re Looking For:
• Education: B.S. in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Occupational Health, Environmental Management, or a related scientific/technical field.
• Experience: 10+ years managing EHS personnel, programs, and budgets, with significant expertise in radiation safety programs and team leadership.
• RSO Qualifications: Meets (or can meet within a reasonable timeframe) state Department of Public Health requirements to serve as an RSO on a Broad Scope license.
• Location: On-site in Cambridge, MA (must be able to commute/relocate daily; work authorization required).
